What is Osteopathic Medicine?
Osteopathic medicine is a distinct branch of medical care in the United States that emphasizes a whole-person approach to treatment and prevention. It was founded in the late 1800s by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, who believed that the body has an innate ability to heal itself when its structure and function are in balance.
Today, doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) are fully licensed physicians who blend modern medical science with hands-on care, known as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT).
What is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)?
A DO is a licensed physician who can prescribe medications, perform surgery, and practice in all medical specialties—just like an MD. What sets DOs apart is our additional training in the musculoskeletal system, our focus on preventive care, and our use of OMT as a hands-on tool to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions.
What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?
OMT is a set of gentle, hands-on techniques used to diagnose, treat, and support the body’s natural healing process. It involves using the physician’s hands to:
Improve joint mobility
Release muscle tension
Enhance blood and lymphatic flow
OMT is especially helpful for conditions like back pain, headaches, joint stiffness, postural imbalances, digestive issues, and more. It is tailored to the individual and always guided by medical diagnosis.
What kinds of conditions can OMT help with?
OMT is used for a wide range of conditions, including:
Neck, back, and joint pain
Headaches and migraines
TMJ dysfunction
Postural imbalances
Digestive issues (e.g., GERD, constipation)
Respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, congestion)
Pregnancy-related discomfort
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
Is OMT safe?
Yes. OMT is safe, non-invasive, and always tailored to the patient's comfort level and condition. At Balance Osteopathic Clinic, we use the gentlest techniques necessary to support healing.
Can OMT help with mental health?
The short answer is yes. Emotions are stored in the body, and you can often be brought back to difficult moments even after you have worked through the problems in therapy. There are different forms of OMT, including Craniosacral Therapy, that can calm the central nervous system and restore internal balance. I am also able to prescribe first line psychiatric medications for those who need a little more support starting out.
Do I need a referral for OMT?
You don’t need a referral to see a DO for OMT, but we’re happy to work in collaboration with your primary care physician, physical therapist, or specialist to support your wellness journey.
How is OMT different from other forms of bodywork (chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, or acupuncture)?
OMT is unique because it combines hands-on care with medical knowledge, giving patients the benefit of structural treatment within a broader health context.
